Successful Travel & Tourism Student Conference at Yale College
Yale College welcomed travel and tourism students from across the region to the first Wales Travel and Tourism Student Conference to be held on campus.
College Principal Jasbir Dhesi opened the event for students and introduced keynote speakers who gave an overview of the challenges and opportunities faced in the North Wales travel economy, outlining how Wales targets its customers as well as focussing on innovations offered in the adventure business for visitors.
“We are delighted with success of the event which has truly lived up to expectations as an invaluable experience to Level 3 Travel and Tourism learners,” says Rona Griffiths, Travel Tourism Lecturer at Yale College who led on planning and organisation for the event at Yale College.
Packing the College’s Studio Theatre, Yale’s travel and tourism students were joined by visitors from Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, Deeside College and others to gain strategic overviews of the industry from professional before breaking out into a range of workshops. Interactive workshops included online training programmes; marketing; planning as well as crisis management. Students were also able to examine consistency factors in brand values and explore approaches to preparing themselves for employment in the industry, working overseas and developing their own career progression.
Summing up initial speeches, John Humphries of People 1st Cymru expressed gratitude to all contributory participants including keynote speakers Dewi Davies, Regional Strategy Director of Tourism Partnership North Wales; Caryl Jones, Industry Engagement Manager for VisitWales and Peter Carol, Manager of ProAdventure for their guidance to learners. Workshop leaders included Bruce Martin, Operations Director from Online Travel Training; Tansy Rogerson, Sales & marketing Manager of Bodnant Welsh Food; Joe Bickerton, Regeneration Project Manager, Wrexham County Borough Council; Cherie Richards, Commercial Director, The Global Travel Group; Simon Harding of Deganwy Quay Hotel; Joe Lavin, Director of Castle Hotel Conwy and Kathryn Coles of Kirker Holidays.
People 1st Cymru, in partnership with Springboard Wales instigated the conference with Yale College who extend thanks for the generous support of VisitWales, their partner College and industry participants enabling them to offer students the opportunity to attend the event including a light buffet lunch and refreshments.
